Why Patch and Upgrade Your Computer Operating System?

Your computer is a snapshot in time of what the manufacturer believed to be a secure, stable operating system (OS). This is the foundation on which you install the software you use, such as word processing or entertainment applications. Your OS manages the hardware, software, memory and processes while giving you the clean, modern, graphical user interface to interact with your various programs.

To keep up with the ever changing threat landscape, as well as to improve performance and usability, the manufacturer releases security patches and software upgrades.

Security patches are usually released monthly and contain critical fixes for issues that could allow hacker to take over your computer remotely, steal your data or use your computer to attack others. It’s important to install these patches on your computer as soon as possible after they are released, because the hackers are likely already exploiting these vulnerabilities or will be once they learn of the issue. Also, make sure to install any patches for the applications you have installed on your computer.

OS system upgrades are equally important to install. This is the reason your computer does not look or work the same as a Windows 95 or MacOS from the year 2000. The manufacturers make fundamental changes to the underlying structure of the OS to support things like modern encryption, while making it harder for hackers to attack the core system. They also improve performance and usability.

Vendors cannot continue to support and create patches for every version of the OS they have ever released, so they cut off support around 5 years after that version is released. You can check the vendor website to see if your current version is supported. With Apple’s naming convention it is easier to track your version and the support.

For example, here is how you can check your version of Windows 10:

  • Rightmouse click on the window icon at the bottom left of your screen
  • Click on System
  • Scroll down to Windows Edition and Version

You also need to upgrade your applications when they come out with new version to get the latest security and features.

Keep your computer clean and up to date like an organized operating room – it’s important!
