Episode 4 of the Customer Confidence Webinar Series: Branded Communications Drive Digital Adoption

Offset Rising USPS Rates with Paperless Billing

As USPS postage rates continue to rise, many organizations are looking for ways to reduce print and mail expenses without sacrificing customer experience. At the same time, more billers are embracing digital-first strategies to improve efficiency, lower operational costs, and modernize customer communications.

With 1-ounce stamp prices increasing from $0.78 to $0.82 and metered letters rising from $0.74 to $0.78 in July 2026, even small increases can have a significant financial impact.

For organizations using metered mail, a 4-cent increase per envelope adds up quickly at scale — a biller sending 100,000 paper statements annually could see postage costs increase by approximately $4,000 per year from postage alone.

One of the most effective ways to offset these rising costs is by increasing paperless billing adoption.

Here are several strategies to help drive enrollment and reduce reliance on mailed statements:

Make Paperless Enrollment the Easy Choice

Simplify the enrollment process by pre-selecting the paperless billing checkbox during payment or account registration workflows. Reducing friction at enrollment can significantly improve adoption rates while still allowing customers to opt out if they choose.

Convert DigitallyEngaged Customers to Paperless

Customers already enrolled in AutoPay, or who are registered for online accounts, are ideal candidates for paperless billing. Since these users are already interacting digitally, encouraging or automatically transitioning them to paperless can be one of the fastest ways to increase enrollment.

Promote the Benefits of Going Paperless

Sometimes the simplest strategy is the most effective: Ask your customers to enroll. Use bill messages, email campaigns, website banners, posters, and other communication channels to highlight the benefits of paperless billing, including:

  • Faster access to bills
  • Reduced risk of missed payments
  • Increased convenience
  • Less paper clutter
  • More environmentally friendly billing
